1924-D $20 St. Gaudens NGC MS63
1924-D $20 St. Gaudens. NGC graded MS-63. Quite frosty with luster and all lightly toned. A scarce sought-after date. The 1924-D begins a run of rare mintmarked pieces that continues to the end of the Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle series in the early 1930s. The majority of Mint state survivors were found in European hoards of the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. Writing in 1988, Breen observed that a further 70 pieces surfaced in the summer of 1983. (Perhaps these formed part of the Central American hoard in which were released several Mint State 1909-D and 1922-S Double Eagles at around the same time.) The otherwise orange-gold color yields to warmer pinkish-rose hues toward the centers.

This handsome '63 ranks among those being clearly above-average with ample mint frost and a lovely surface-to-eye aesthetic transmission. Satiny surfaces abound on both sides. A few minor bagmarks are suppressed by the volumes of luster: we note a small mark on the bottom of the eagle's neck feathers and another diagonally across two flight feathers, with gentle blurring of Liberty's face. Outside of these small blemishes, not a single disturbance worth describing. Pop 101 (PCGS # 9178) .
Estimated Value $8,500 - 9,500.
