1924-D $20 MS64 PCGS. A number of late-series Saint-Gaudens mintmarked pieces are now less rare than formerly, due to the discovery of small mini-hoards overseas that eventually made their way back to the United States. The 1924-D is one such. As Q. David Bowers wrote in The Numismatic Sun #5 (winter/spring 2005), "Most rare coins keep getting rarer as the years pass, but notable exceptions are certain of the Saint-Gaudens double eagles of the 1920s and 1930s. Most of the mintmarks of this era as well as the later (1929 and afterward) dates were exceedingly rare in the 1950s, less rare in the 1960s, and are widely collectible today. The explanation is that foreign reserves have been tapped, including sources not known earlier."
In the case of the 1924-D, today the issue must be considered as more of a conditional rarity than an absolute, as PCGS has certified well over 100 examples in MS64, yet only eight coins finer, as always including the inevitable duplications (6/07). This piece offers exuberant luster over the deep apricot-gold surfaces, with tinges of mint-green and hazel near the rims. The strike is precise and intricate, and only a few light contact marks on Liberty's torso and the sun on the reverse appear to limit a finer grade.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
