<B>1924-D $20 MS64 PCGS.</B></I> The topsy-turvy world of Saint-Gaudens coinage is one where mintages are meaningless and the melting pot makes major rarities. The vast majority of the 3,049,500 1924-D double eagles coined remained in government vaults until the executive recall of 1933, and just a fraction of them escaped destruction. Those that survived often faced circulation or careless storage, and Select and finer representatives remain elusive.<BR> The pale yellow-gold surfaces display strong luster and an above-average strike. Aside from a handful of tiny ticks, the devices are clean, and the few abrasions present in the fields are shallow, short, and well-distributed. Garrett and Guth write that for the 1924-D, "a coin grading MS64 is about as nice as a collector can hope to secure." Similarly, this representative is among the best-preserved certified examples not found in a Gem holder.
