1924-D $20 MS64 PCGS. The 1923-D and the 1924 are quit
1924-D $20 MS64 PCGS. The 1923-D and the 1924 are quite common in Mint State, and with a mintage of more than 3 million pieces, one would suppose that the 1924-D is also readily available. Such a conclusion would be correct, of course, were it not for Franklin Roosevelt's attempted solution of the Great Depression. To inflate the economy, the dollar was devalued as measured by gold bullion. Roosevelt legally obliged citizens to redeem gold coins in return for paper money, the government then melted the coins into bullion bars which served to support the currency. Only a miniscule percentage of 1924-D twenties survived the smelter, most of which resided in European vaults for decades until their numismatic importance was recognized. Most 1924-D double eagles are Uncirculated but show bagmarks from their indifferent shipment and storage. For the present piece, however, only a small mark in the left obverse field denies status as a full Gem. Near-Gem specimens provide an affordable and obtainable alternative.
