1924-D $20 MS64 PCGS. Lustrous deep strawberry-gold and lilac surfaces are the hallmark of this delectable near-Gem, a coin especially appropriate for the color connoisseurs among collectors of this series. The 1924-D is scarce in Mint State, although obtainable up through Choice condition and seldom seen in Gem. The present example is boldly struck in the centers and extremely appealing. It does, however, show the slight striking softness that is usually seen around the peripheries.
This quote from Q. David Bowers' Guide Book of Double Eagles gives the term rara avis (rare bird) new piquancy: "However, offerings are frequent, due to a combination of more piece being available than previously, due to imports and the curious situation, prevalent throughout numismatics, of buyers taking home a piece from an auction, the putting it back on the market soon thereafter. Sometimes a rare double eagle will do quite a bit of flitting around until it finds a lasting perch." This premium quality example should have little trouble finding an enduring home. PCGS has graded eight coins finer (3/07).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
