1924-D $20 MS64 PCGS. Ex: Brahin. Aside from the 1923-D, which must have been distributed in a different manner, all branch mint double eagles from the 1920s and 1930s are rare. Philadelphia dates between 1922 and 1928 survived the 1933 gold recall in sufficient quantities for today's collectors, but the 1924-D did not, despite a production of more than 3 million pieces. Apparently, bags of the 1924-D remained at the Treasury, although any collector could have obtained an example for face value, or close to it, prior to 1933. Most 1924-D twenties were melted, and among those that remain, the majority are in AU58 to MS63 grades. MS64 is the highest collectible grade, since PCGS has certified just seven pieces finer (11/06). This lustrous apricot and green-gold near-Gem has a well preserved obverse, and the reverse is also pleasing despite a couple of minor marks on the front wing. A splendid opportunity for the rare date gold specialist.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
