1924-D $20 MS64 NGC. During the mid to late 1920s, the large quantities of double eagles produced at all three mints met with different fates. International trade resulted in the export of many pieces, as the double eagle was the largest individual gold piece produced in the U.S., thus the easiest to transport. Others remained at the Mint, unreleased and perhaps unwanted. Relatively few were actually released to banks for commerce. Most pieces available to current collectors are examples that were once exported and recently imported. Those that remained at the Mint were eventually melted after the gold recall of 1933. Some of the pieces that went into circulation were saved by collectors, but most were also turned in to be melted. This example is highly lustrous with frosty orange gold color and excellent eye appeal. Only the slightest scattered surface marks are evident. Just 11 finer examples of this issue have been certified finer by NGC (6/07).
From The DAX Collection.

Coin Engraver: Augustus Saint-Gaudens

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information\)
