1924-D $20 MS63 PCGS. David Bowers (200
1924-D<$20> MS63 PCGS. David Bowers (2004) writes that most of the 1924-D double eagle mintage of 3,049,500 pieces was probably retained in the United States and melted in the mid-1930s. Today the '24-D is quite scarce, though coins through the MS63 and MS64 grade levels will be available with a little patience and searching. Gem and better examples are rare, with fewer than 15 examples certified. The MS63 specimen offered here displays variegated yellow and peach-gold patina with tinges of light green. Lustrous surfaces reveal just a few minute marks that are consistent with the grade, though a couple of moderate rim nicks at 8 and 10 o'clock on the obverse are also mentioned for accuracy.
