1924<$20> MS68 PCGS. Without a doubt, the 1924 Saint-Gaudens twenty is the single most common double eagle, regardless of design, edging out both the 1904 Liberty and 1928 Saint-Gaudens issues. Dave Bowers called this date the "poster coin for the casual buyer," although he was hardly considering an example in Superb MS68 quality. In fact, only three With Motto issues of this design, struck from 1908 to 1933, have received the MS68 grade from PCGS. The other two dates are examples of San Francisco Mint coinage, struck in 1910 and 1925.
This date was not always considered a common issue, but was thought to be a scarcer date until massive quantities were brought back from overseas holdings, beginning in the 1940s and continuing through the 1950s and 1960s. In the second edition of the Guide Book, published in 1947, Uncirculated examples of this date were priced at $90, while the most common issues were priced at only $70 to $75. Much has changed in the last 60 years, and knowledge of rare date coins has been refined, especially in light of hoards and treasures that have been discovered since that time. For example, in 1947 the highest priced Saint-Gaudens double eagle was not the 1927-D, but the 1926-D. In fact, the 1926-S and 1927-S issues were also priced higher than the '27-D.
Today, it is believed that over a million examples of the 1924 issue still exist, and yet, the connoisseur of the finest such coins must own this example. The only comparable piece is the single MS68 example certified by NGC. This beauty is fully struck with exquisite orange-gold luster and finely grained satiny surfaces. Both sides are practically flawless and perfect. It is actually possible to count, one at a time, the few tiny ticks on the surfaces, a virtual impossibility on any lower quality example. This design is considered by most to be the most beautiful coinage de
