1924<$20> MS68 PCGS. Even though more than $80 million face value in double eagles were struck this year, most were earmarked for overseas shipment as payment in international transactions, and were subsequently stored in bank vaults in Switzerland, France, and elsewhere. The majority of large denomination gold coins in the late 19th and early 20th century were struck for export, and the 1924 was no different. Few '24s were actually released for domestic circulation, and it is rare that one is seen today in less than MS60 condition.
The 1924 is considered about equal to the 1927 in terms of availability in grades up to and including MS67. It is believed that more than a million pieces have managed to survive the years and the melting furnaces. It is widely collected for this reason and is often considered a "poster coin" for numismatic articles and advertisements.
This example immediately grabs one's attention, and forces the viewer to admire its stunning beauty. The overall effect is breathtaking. Dazzling luster cascades from the spectacular peach-gold surfaces that display a slight pebbly-like texture. The strike is superb down to the last minute detail. The olive branch, Liberty's fingers and toes, and the leaves near the rock exhibit sharp definition. Only portions of the Capitol dome reveal minor softness. One is required to inspect the surfaces carefully with a loupe in order to locate even the tiniest abrasions. Indeed, the only identifiable mark for pedigree purposes is located on the upper ray that emanates from between the O and the D in GOD. In a word, this coin is simply incredible, and we expect numerous bidders to agree and to compete for the privilege of owning this spectacular example, which is among the two or three finest known.
From The JFS Collection, Part Three.
