1923-S 50C Monroe MS67 PCGS. This coin was previously offered as lot 6281 in our January 1996 FUN Signature Sale, where it was cataloged as: "In 1923 Hollywood scandals shocked the nation when Fatty Arbuckle was involved in a lurid orgy and murder, and director William Desmond Taylor died under mysterious circumstances. Studio heads began to search for means by which they could raise the public's regard for movies, stars, and directors. They hit upon the idea of sponsoring a centennial celebration honoring the Monroe Doctrine. An exposition was held in one of the stadiums in the Los Angeles area, and commemorative coins were struck. The Monroe Doctrine Centennial Half Dollar was struck in shallow relief and, despite a plentiful mintage, it has become one of the premier condition rarities in the entire commemorative series. It is very elusive in Gem condition and this extraordinary coin is one of the finest available. While not technically perfect, the surfaces are as free from abrasions as any Monroe we have seen with no singularly mentionable marks on either side. The obverse is toned in deep shadings of golden, rose, lilac, and sea-green. The reverse is brilliant in the center with a ring of light golden-brown patina around the rim. Superb luster is seen throughout and is abundantly clear even on the toned obverse." Population: 4 in 67, 0 finer (10/02).From the St. Louis Collection.
