1923-S 50C Monroe MS67 PCGS. Ex: Bruce Scher. Long before the controversial films of the 1950s and 1960s, or even "talkies" (The Jazz Singer was released in 1927), American actors and directors alike had developed unsavory reputations, and multiple deaths in the early 1920s only heightened public perception of Hollywood as a modern-day Sodom or Gomorrah. Congress authorized the 1923 commemorative issue that was a tie-in to a public relations exhibition, largely blinded by the ostensible celebration of the Monroe Doctrine centenary, an "anniversary of convenience" for the filmmakers.
Unlike the vast majority of Monroes, hardly any mentionable marks appear on either side of this attractive example. The obverse possesses gorgeous shades of golden-rose, lilac, and emerald, while the reverse is brilliant in the center with a ring of delicate golden-brown patina at the margins. This coin's powerful luster shines brightly, even on the richly toned obverse. A magnificent representative. Population: 4 in 67, 0 finer (3/07).
From The Cary & Cheryl Porter Collection.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
