The famous Civil War photographer Mathew Brady took the photo on which this engraving of President Lincoln was based. Brady studied daguerrotypy under the famous inventor Samuel F.B. Morse, and established a studio in New York City in 1844. His record of the Civil War was published in 1870 as Brady's National Photographic Collection.
