1922-S $20 St. Gaudens PCGS MS65
Although this is no longer a key date when all grades are considered, and it ranks only 32nd out of 54 issues, according to David Akers, examples at the Gem grade level are extremely elusive. A number of these coins have been found in European in hoards of double eagles, but we must caution that almost all were in lower Mint State grades. At one time, the 1922-S was considered a major rarity in the Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle series. But differing opinions exist regarding the number of coins extracted from hoards of this date. David Akers estimated that "a hoard of more than 200 pieces" turned up in Central America in 1983. Walter Breen discussing this same hoard, gave a much larger number in the vicinity of 7,000. With the availability of this date, neither figure seems to be accurate, but just the same, this example is exquisite with its frosty yellow-gold luster and hints of reddish color from the 10% copper alloy. The surfaces are virtually perfect with only minor bagmarks or imperfections. It is as sharp as these are found, with clearly defined design elements on both sides and deserves every attention from astute buyers. (#9174)
