1922-S $20 MS66 PCGS. Despite the large quantities of this issue that have made a return trip to this country after years in overseas bank vaults, Gem quality examples are still exceedingly rare, and in Premium Gem grade, they are essentially non-existent. Prior to the 1950s, this issue was considered one of the major rarities in the series. In the 1950 catalog of the Jerome Kern sale, for example, B. Max Mehl stated his belief that only 12 examples were known to exist. Such a limited population placed this date on par with such major rarities as the 1804 silver dollar, the 1838-O half dollar, and the 1876-CC twenty-cent piece. No longer can it be considered such a rarity, as examples are generally available in all grades through MS64. Any finer, however, and it remains that this is extremely rare.
This radiant Gem has brilliant yellow luster with frosty surfaces and hints of pinkish toning highlights. The surfaces are remarkably well-preserved, with only a few of the tiniest imperfections. Unlike most examples of this issue, there are no unsightly copper spots, save for a tiny one below the right curve of U in UNITED, and this is an excellent pedigree marker. The bottoms of ERT in LIBERTY are weakly defined, as often seen. Similar weakness is visible on the dome of the Capitol building. The rims are beveled as almost always seen. The remaining design elements on both sides are crisply defined.
This example is tied with one other coin for the finest example of this issue to be certified by PCGS. We have handled many remarkable Saint-Gaudens double eagles in recent sales, but have not recently handled so fine an example of this date. In fact, the best example in the amazing Phillip H. Morse Collection was just MS65. Population: 2 in 66, 0 finer (11/06).

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
