1922-S $20 MS65 NGC. Although this is not a rare date
1922-S<$20> MS65 NGC. Although this is not a rare date when all grades are considered, and it ranks only 32nd out of 54 issues, according to David Akers, examples at the Gem grade level are rare. In fact, PCGS and NGC have combined to certify just 17 coins as MS65 with five finer. Although a number of these coins have been included in hoards of double eagles, all were in lower Mint State grades. At one time, this issue was considered one of the major rarities of the Saint-Gaudens double eagle series. Differing opinions exist regarding the number of coins included in hoards of this date. David Akers noted that "a hoard of more than 200 pieces" turned up in Central America in 1983. Walter Breen discussed this same hoard, but suggested the total number of Mint State coins was in the vicinity of 7,000 pieces. Given the availability of this date, neither figure seems to be accurate. This example is exquisite with its satiny yellow-gold luster and suggestions of green-gold patina overall. The surfaces are virtually perfect with some minor die clashing visible under the eagle. It is sharply struck with sharply defined design elements on both sides. Census: 9 in 65, 3 finer (7/06).
