1922-S $20 MS64 PCGS. With a documented mintage of 2,658,000 pieces, one would expect the 1922-S double eagle to be readily available in quantity for collectors, even in high grade. This is simply not the case and the ubiquitous melting of gold coins during the 1930s is likely the cause. Finding a high grade example can be especially challenging. In fact, the Eliasberg specimen, although not certified, was graded MS63, and the finest example in the Smithsonian Institute collection is considered to be an MS62. This near-Gem is just about as good as it gets for this elusive date. In fact, PCGS has graded only 12 pieces above the MS64 level. Fully struck throughout, the surfaces are lightly frosted and show a slight overlay of reddish patina with no mentionable marks.

Coin Engraver: Augustus Saint-Gaudens

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information\)
