1922-S $20 MS64 PCGS.
1922-S $20 MS64 PCGS.<p>Once considered more rare than such issues as the 1920-S, 1929, and 1930-S, the 1922-S (2.6 million pieces produced) does not appear to have been released in significant quantities in the United States. Rather, many examples were exported, and those that weren't probably remained in federal vaults until melted at a later date. Beginning in the 1950s, and continuing through the early 1970s, quantities of Mint State examples were repatriated from Europe. More recently, in 1983, a group of at least 200 pieces turned up in Central America. As a result, the '22-S is now regarded as the most common mintmarked Double Eagle from the 1920s after the 1923-D. It is still, however, a condition rarity in grades at or above the near-Gem threshold, and precious few coins grade finer than MS64 at the major certification services. Fully frosted with lovely orange-gold color, the surfaces are free of bothersome striking incompleteness. The characteristic die bulge (as struck) is evident around the reverse margin, but post-striking features are conspicuous by their absence. A lovely coin that would fit perfectly into the most advanced collection of 20th century gold. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
