The mintage for the 1922 Peace dollar was enormous with more than 51 million pieces struck. One would think that high grade (Superb) pieces would be common as a result of this massive mintage. However, that is not the case, and it appears that the tremendous output of this date is the very reason so few high grade coins are known today. That is to say, $1,000 bags were shipped around the country and generally regarded as a nuisance to dealers and collectors until recent years. This attitude translated into coins that were extensively abraded. Gems are relatively common; however, Superb examples such as this piece are extraordinarily rare. This is one of only four pieces so graded by NGC, while PCGS has certified 20 examples. None are finer at either service. The face of Liberty, and the obverse in general is smooth and virtually unblemished. The reverse is as well, but there are several of the milky-white specks at the top of that side and a grease stain that was struck into the planchet over the N in UNUM. Exceptionally lustrous, the frosted surfaces are covered with a light layer of golden toning on each side.
From The Robert Moreno Registry Collection of Peace Dollars.
