While only the Denver Mint issued the denomination in that year, a number of coins lacked a mintmark. Though research exposed clogged dies as the culprit, the 1922 "Plain" became an established variety, aided by inclusion in Whitman folders and, later, the <I>Guide Book.</B></I> This medium-brown example exhibits pleasing detail on the reverse, though the obverse displays the usual weakness.
