1922 No D 1C Strong Reverse MS64 Red and Brown NG
1922 No D<1C> Strong Reverse MS64 Red and Brown NGC. FS-013.2. A collectors delight for anyone who has long coveted this classic mint rarity. Early on the discovery was made that despite the mint reports that no Philadelphia cents were struck in 1922, they seemed to be available. Later the riddle was untangled, apparently in the rush to coin millions of Peace silver dollars in 1922, the Denver Mint was ordered to pick up the slack on cents, but had to use the dies they had in stock already. When one of the 1922-D obverse dies clashed, the clashmarks were ground off the die, which also happened to remove the mintmark. More cents were struck, using two different reverse dies, one with strong wheat ears, the other reverse was badly worn and hence became known as the "weak reverse". This coin is from the strong reverse die pairing, and shows no trace of the mintmark. Faded mint red is found in the protected areas, with the balance a typically seen bluish-brown. The surfaces are very clean and attractive, with no distracting nicks on the devices or fields. Without a doubt, this issue is one of the most difficult to find in mint condition, and locating one so close to a Gem grade will represent a triumph for the collector lucky enough to win this lot. Anticipate well deserved competition when this rarity crosses the auction block. Population: 1 in 64, 0 finer (6/05).
