1922<G$1> Grant with Star MS68 NGC. Ex: Swiss America/Dr. Merritt. Well struck, highly lustrous, and seemingly pristine, with lovely bright peach and green-gold toning. The Grant commemorative issues include two varieties of half dollars and two varieties of gold dollars, with or without an incuse star above GRANT. Aside from the different denominations and the obvious size difference, designs on each of these coins are identical. David Bowers, in his Commemorative Coins of the United States, states that: "The purpose of the star was to create a variety for collectors. It had no other meaning of connection with Grant's life." Today nearly all known Grant dollars are in varying degrees of Mint State, with most coins in the MS62 to MS64 range. MS65 and MS66 pieces are available with some searching, but Superb Gems become more difficult. MS68 coins are virtually unobtainable. Census: 3 in 68, 0 finer (4/06).
