1922 G$1 Grant Gold Dollar, Judd-A1922-9, Pollock-3578, Unique, MS63 Brown PCGS. The obverse and reverse designs of the Grant commemorative gold dollar, With Star variety. The reverse design is reversed and incuse. Struck in brass with a reeded edge. Although described as a "copper die trial" by PCGS, this is actually a brass trial piece. However, it is only partly a die trial. The obverse has a positive impression, similar to a struck coin, yet the reverse is an incused and reversed impression, possibly a hub trial, or a brockage image from another struck piece. A heavy planchet crack in the shape of a narrow V appears at 5 o'clock on the obverse and about 7 o'clock on the reverse, given the medallic alignment. It appears that this piece was struck without a collar as the peripheral lettering on each side is distorted toward the rim.
In the July 2002 Bowers and Merena sale, the cataloger suggested that a source of the reverse was possibly an "incuse impression from another brass or hard metal impression of the coin remaining in the anvil die." Under that scenario, a reverse die trial would have been created, then it would have remained in the press while the hammer die was changed (from reverse to obverse), before introduction of an additional planchet to create this piece. Careful examination suggests that this may be the actual scenario. The reverse is slightly dished in appearance, and the entire piece is larger diameter than the reverse die trial also in this sale. The incuse and reversed image is somewhat less sharp, suggesting a brockage type image rather than a hub trial. Both sides have glossy golden-brown and deep yellow color with noticeable corrosion at the upper obverse and reverse. Regardless of how it was made, this is an extraordinary piece that will appeal to both the commemorative collector and the pattern specialist.
Ex: Major Lenox Lohr Collection; 1958 ANA Sale (A.
