1922 Assay Commission Medal. MS63 Uncertified. Julian AC-66, R.4. Bronze, 50.9 mm., 882.7 grains. A signed medal with the name of commission member B.G. Shields engraved on the edge. Treasury Secretary Andrew W. Mellon is depicted on the obverse, in profile view facing left, with his name in the left and right fields. The reverse has a defiant eagle facing to the left, holding crossed branches of oak and olive. The legend MINT OF THE UNITED STATES ANNUAL ASSAY follows the border with the date at lower right. Treasury scales and key appear at the lower left, on a curled shield. The obverse has a small M on the truncation, identifying George Morgan as the engraver. The reverse was also by Morgan, although Francis Pessolano-Filos incorrectly identified the engraver of the reverse as John Sinnock. This example is struck in yellow-bronze with splashes of deeper olive toning on both sides.
Mr. B.G. Shields, to whom this medal was originally presented, served on the Assay Commission as chairman of the committee on assaying. Shields was employed by the U.S. Assay Office in New York, although his exact capacity with that facility is not known.
