1922 50C Grant with Star MS67 NGC. Ric Leichtung, a Florida collector, wrote "Forgotten Intentions," a moving indictment of the neglect faced by President Ulysses S. Grant's birthplace and the schoolhouse where he received his basic education. The article, published in the October 1989 edition of The Numismatist, juxtaposed the high prices for commemoratives, particularly two Grant with Star pieces sold in 1987 and 1988 as the bull market reached dizzying heights, and the promises made and broken by the distributors of the halves in 1922. In just three pages, Leichtung conjured visions of utter disrepair, flaking paint, undignified handwritten signs, weeds, and boarded-up windows. Since the article was published and its charges repeated in the milestone history of commemoratives written by Bowers in 1991, both sites have undergone restoration, and recent images available on the Ohio Cultural Facilities Commission website show well-kept grounds and properly maintained buildings that host regular tours. The Georgetown "Community Building" mentioned in literature of the time and the proposed highway between New Richmond and Point Pleasant, however, never came to be.
The piece offered here is an uncommonly appealing and exceedingly well-preserved representative of the elusive With Star type, which has a net mintage of just 4,256 pieces. The pristine surfaces exhibit pleasing luster beneath soft plum, blue-gray, gold-orange, and ruby patina. The unaided eye detects only a single minuscule flaw in the right obverse field. A top-notch classic commemorative condition rarity. One of eight coins in a tie for finest known, five graded by NGC and three by PCGS (3/07).
From The Cary & Cheryl Porter Collection.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
