1922<50C> Grant with Star MS66 PCGS. Ex: Richard Jewell Collection. The 1922 Grant half dollar with Star in field has long been regarded as a key to the silver commemorative series. Only 4,256 pieces were struck, then the Star was removed from the obverse die by a mint worker, and the more plentiful No Star variety was produced. The Star has no significance, other than continuing the brief numismatic fad of extra symbol varieties for the 1921 Missouri and Alabama types. The present beautiful Premium Gem offers light peach and pearl-gray toning. The strike is bold, although the tree trunk near the window is incomplete, as always. The preservation is close to immaculate apart from a tiny aqua obverse spot at 9:30. Population: 31 in 66, 3 finer (9/06).
