1922 50C Grant with Star MS66 NGC. For the projected mintage of 10,000 Grant gold dollars, the distributors requested two varieties, half with an incuse star in the right obverse field and half without. Through a miscommunication (source unknown), the Mint also coined 5,000 half dollars with the star in the field as well. The distributors opted not to question their good fortune, and both Grant denominations became examples of the dubious practices associated with classic commemoratives.
With a net mintage of only 4,256 pieces, any Grant with Star half is a prize, and Gems are conditionally scarce. This essentially unmarked coin is a clear step up from that level, strongly lustrous with orange and gold patina at the margins. Both sides show minor evidence of die clashing in the fields. NGC has graded only eight coins finer, three in MS66 and five in MS67 (11/07).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
