The difficulty of striking large numbers of high relief Peace Dollars in the previous year led to second thoughts from Mint officials about mass production of a similar issue for 1922. Of course, the decision was eventually made to rework the original design in lower relief.
Not only are these elusive Matte Proofs struck in high relief, but the surface texture is entirely different than regular issue Silver Dollars from this year. This specimen has medium gray color with a faint suggestion of golden patina and numerous microscopic flecks of deeper charcoal toning. The striking details are quintessentially needle sharp and the immaculate surfaces are free of hairlines, shiny spots, or abrasions. The multitude of tiny toning flecks and pristine surface quality point this piece in the direction of Paramount's section of the Auction '85 Sale (number 5 on the roster below), but it is a small, round planchet flake between R and T of LIBERTY along the obverse border that assures the pedigree of this outstanding, finest certified specimen as being the former Philadelphia estate coin. Population: 1 in 67, 0 finer (4/03).
When the Norweb piece was sold several years ago, a roster of known 1922 Matte Proof Dollars included:
1. The Norweb specimen. Acquired from B. Max Mehl, April 28, 1937.
2. The Chase Manhattan Bank Money Museum to the Smithsonian. Ex: Farran Zerbe?
3. The Rhodes-Moorman-Breen coin, illustrated in Walter Breen's monograph on Proof coins. Offered in Stack's sale of the Barker Collection, October 1986, lot 113.
4. Auction '84 (RARCOA's session, 7/84), lot 1793, reappearing in Mid-American's 1986 FUN Sale, lot 354.
5. Auction '85 (Paramount's session, 7/85), lot 1277. Reportedly from an old Philadelphia estate since the time of mintage.
6. Bowers and Ruddy Galleries, offered in the Rare Coin Review, issue # 35, 1980. Reappearing in their sale of Four Memorable Collections (9/85), lot 652.
7. An impaired example, Ex: Bruce Todd Collection, sold by RARCOA at the 1973 FUN auction.

Previous Prices from Heritage Auctions

No Prior Data Recorded

<FONT face=arial size=1 ?>PLEASE NOTE: All prices realized reflect the final hammer price PLUS the buyer's premium in auctions that charge a buyer's premium.
