1921-S S$1 MS66 NGC. Poor striking quality, indifferent luster, and/or numerous bagmarks explain why relatively few '21-S Morgans possess high technical quality and impressive eye appeal. This is not to imply that this final-year issue is rare in an absolute sense. It most certainly is not, as survivors from the sizeable delivery of 21.6 million pieces are plentiful in circulated and low Mint State grades. As a Gem, however, the '21-S is scarce by 1921-dated Morgan Dollar standards, and precious few coins grade finer than MS65. The present representative is unsurpassable at either NGC or PCGS. The luster is remarkably vibrant for the issue with a rich, frosty sheen that is uninhibited by even the lightest toning. Some striations (as produced) are seen in the left obverse field, and there is a small planchet void (also as struck) in the field before Liberty's throat. Powerfully impressed with eye appeal to spare. Combined MS66 population at the two major grading services is a mere 34 coins, and there are none finer (7/02).
