1921-S 5C MS66 PCGS. The conjunction of numerous striking anomalies explain why the typically offered circulated or Mint State 1921-S Buffalo Nickel is a coin that most collectors would not want to include in their date sets. Laminations, streaks, and other flaws suggest that many examples were impressed on poorly prepared planchets. What's more, many coins show signs of extended die life in the form of sizeable cracks, cuds, and excessive flow lines. The present example, on the other hand, is sharply struck throughout with no evident planchet problems. Interestingly, the die state is late. Apparently, the dies had become extensively clashed, remnants of which can still be seen in the obverse field. Both were extensively polished to remove as many of these clashmarks as possible. In so doing, Mint employees left numerous die polish lines that one can see in virtually all field areas of this coin. The innermost feather and the Indian's neck are also attenuated with the former feature virtually gone. The surface preservation is extraordinary, both sides being free of bothersome abrasions and carbon spots. This is a bright, virtually untoned Gem with full mint bloom. NGC and PCGS combined have seen only eight examples in MS66 and none finer (10/02).From The BTB Collection of Buffalo Nickels.
