1921-S 5C MS64 PCGS.
1921-S 5C MS64 PCGS.<p>Few Buffalo Nickels can rival the 1921-S for rarity in attractive states of preservation. For starters, the San Francisco Mint delivered only 1.5 million examples, most of which undoubtedly saw heavy circulation in the absence of Nickel production in 1922. Also, this issue is plagued by poor planchet stock, and laminations and/or toning streaks mar many otherwise desirable Mint State survivors. Finally, poor striking quality suggests an over reliance on worn dies and generally poor workmanship. That said, we are pleased to be offering this lovely near-Gem. With virtually no carbon and nary a distracting abrasion to report, this coin has the look of a Gem. The lustrous surfaces are further enhanced by competing swirls of olive-gold and lilac-gray patina, and the strike is as close to full as one should expect for the issue. The only reason why we think this coin did not grade MS65 is because there is a thin lamination (as struck) on the obverse at the Indian's nose that is so well concealed that we did not notice it the first time we examined the surfaces. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
