1921-S<50C> MS65 NGC. Among early gold coins, the undisputed King is the 1822 Half Eagle. Morgan Dollars have their King in the 1895 Proof. Among Early Silver Dollars, it is the 1804. In fact, every series has its own King, and among Walking Liberty Half Dollars it is the 1921-S. In this series, it is not the highest priced, or the lowest mintage, but it is the best known rarity in Gem condition. During the declining economic times of the late teens and early twenties, few had the means to afford coin collecting, thus nearly all of the 548,000 coins minted went into circulation where they were considerably worn. In fact, this coin is virtually a common date in grades below Fine. NGC has only certified 20 of these, with a single finer example. The PCGS population is similar, with 22 Gem MS65 examples and one finer grade coin. Among those that are graded MS65, we cannot imagine any with more eye appeal than this example. Both sides are fully brilliant without any evidence of toning. The fields are satiny and approach prooflike status. Although not fully struck, the central details including Liberty's hand are quite sharp. Only the head of Liberty lacks definition. This is only the tenth Gem quality example of this issue that we have handled in the last dozen years, not even one per annum. If you have been seeking a Gem for your collection, this example would be a good candidate. Population: 20 in 65, 1 finer (6/05).
From The Robert Moreno Collection.
