1921-S 50C MS64 PCGS. Although President Theodore Roosevelt was no longer in office, the Treasury Department conducted a coinage design competition in response to his desire for all new coinage designs, the same desire that resulted in the Lincoln cent, the Indian gold coins, and the Saint-Gaudens double eagle. Adolph A. Weinman submitted the winning designs for the Mercury dime and the Walking Liberty half dollar, and both designs made their first appearance in 1916.
A condition rarity in the series, the '21-S Walker is elusive in grades better than Fine. Examples that qualify as Mint State are highly desirable, and seldom seen, either in auctions or on bourse floors. The Heritage archives show more than 300 examples of this date offered in all grades, with just 50 of those in MS60 or finer condition, and only 15 pieces better than this example. In his Complete Encyclopedia, Walter Breen implied by his comments that only about 20 Mint State examples are known when he said: "Possibly all UNC survivors are from a single roll, mostly weak strikes." While it is evident today that there are more than 20 such pieces, the number of survivors clearly does not exceed the demand for such coins.
This example displays satiny silver luster that is created by microscopic die polish lines in the fields, imparting a reflective appearance. The surfaces are fully brilliant white, save for a trace of gold color on each side. The motifs are relatively sharp, with weakness located at Liberty's head, left hand at the center, and the upper skirt lines. Most of the reverse detail is boldly defined, including all of the breast feathers. Population: 45 in 64, 17 finer (6/07).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
