1921-S<50C> MS64 PCGS. The 1921-S Walker is a curious issue. Although its total mintage of 548,000 pieces is the fifth lowest of the series, it is the highest of the three 1921-dated issues. Most pieces were immediately released into circulation, where they stayed, to the point where most encountered today are in grades of VG and below. Indeed, in such low grades, this date rates merely as a semi-key. Those pieces fortunate enough to have been saved from most of the ravages of circulation are highly prized, and even a piece in the Extremely Fine range is worthy of note. Full mint state pieces are scarce, and do not exist in nearly enough quantity to satisfy the many collectors of this popular series.
The present coin is a bright, lustrous piece with a mere hint of pale gold toning. As usual for this issue, the strike is not full, yet it is above average for the date with virtually full skirt lines and weakness limited to the high points of the head and hand. Surface marks are in line with the grade, with a couple of small abrasions on the sun barely meriting a mention. The reverse is struck from a late and perhaps terminal die state, as what might at first appear to be a scratch along the eagle's breast is instead a die break (as struck) extending from the neck downward between the legs, by the toes, and over the first L, with a branch extending from the L and extending above LLAR to the back wing. An attractive Choice example of the "King of the Walkers," certain to be coveted by dedicated collectors of high-end Walking Liberty halves and perhaps a piece that is destined for further study by a specialist.
From The Big Tex Registry Set of Walking Liberty Halves.
