1921-S 50C AU53 PCGS. Despite a seemingly small mintage of 548,000 pieces, the 1921-S is actually the most available of the Walking Liberty half dollar issues for that year. Still, the 1921-S presents its own set of challenges. In his conversational style, Paul M. Green wrote in the March 7, 2000 edition of Numismatic News that the issue was available but tricky: "Actually in circulated grades the 1921-S is not that tough, but watch out if you want a real nice example because they are among the toughest of all Walking Liberty half dollars."
In 2007, collectors recognize just how elusive attractive examples are, particularly in About Uncirculated and better grades. This still-lustrous piece offers subtle ice-blue and champagne shadings over silver-gray surfaces. Minor wear appears on the well struck devices, and a modicum of definition is evident on Liberty's branch hand. Both sides show scattered marks, including a long, thin abrasion in the right obverse field, yet the overall eye appeal remains strong. A wonderful example that would make an excellent addition to a similarly graded collection.

Coin Engraver: Adolph A.
