1921 S$1 Zerbe PR66 PCGS. The 1921 Zerbe proof Dollars 1921[S$1] Zerbe PR66 PCGS.
1921<S$1> Zerbe PR66 PCGS. The 1921 Zerbe proof Dollars were struck for the influential numismatist Farran Zerbe. The story goes that since the mint did not have the dies prepared, and the new Peace Dollars ready for distribution by the time of the ANA in the summer of that year, as a "personal favor" to Zerbe the mint struck off some undetermined number of proofs of the 1921 Morgan Dollar. Estimates of the number struck of this special issue range widely from only a few dozen pieces to as many as 200. As with all genuine Zerbe specimens, there is a faint die scratch extending from the second U in UNUM to the border.
This is an especially fine example that is brilliant throughout. The fields show the swirling die polish marks that are also diagnostic of all Zerbe strikings. However, unlike many Zerbe proofs, this piece was carefully handled and there are virtually no contact marks on either side of this brilliant coin. Fully struck throughout, with complete detailing evident even on the reverse wreath, which is where fullness of strike is determined on the redesigned 1921 issues. Population: 7 in 66, none finer (11/05).
From The JFS Collection, Part Three.
