1921 S$1 Satin PR64 NGC. Formerly sold as lot 4351 in our Morris Silverman Sale as an adjunct to the 2002 Central State Sale, where the coin was described as, " We have only handled four other Satin Finish 1921 Peace Dollars in the past ten years. Needless to say, such coins are exceptionally rare and not without controversy. However, one look at the surfaces of this coin will remove any doubt about its special striking status. Breen believes that the first 20 coins produced from this pair of dies were proofs, and of that number perhaps only 7-10 pieces are recognizable as such today. While the matte proof strikings have been known for decades, the Satin Finish variant did not surface until the 1975 ANA. Afterward, in 1979-80 a number were authenticated by Breen, but several of these were later discredited as business strikes struck after the limited run of proofs. As with the other pieces we have examined over the years, there are numerous die polishing marks on the upper obverse around the letters in LIBERTY, and the pellet after TRVST is especially well brought up. On the reverse, the rays have a three-dimensional, high relief appearance with polishing marks seen between them--all of these are diagnostics that are laid out in Breen's proof book (1977), page 220. The striking details are complete over both sides. Brilliant throughout, the surfaces are bright and highly lustrous with an almost semi-prooflike finish in the fields. The only identifying marks on this remarkable coin are very small, perhaps so small they may not show up in a photograph: a tiny lint mark is located on Liberty's cheek in a line behind the mouth, a small contact mark is located in the left obverse field a few millimeters in front of Liberty's upper lip, and another very small mark is fairly well concealed in the middle of the eagle's neck at the top of the upper row of neck feathers." The coin brought $29,325 in that historic offering of Silver Dollars. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
