The completeness of strike on this coin should be enough to alert the astute Peace dollar collector that there is something unusual about this coin. Business strikes, as a rule, do not show the fine detailing seen on this piece. The matte proof variant of the 1921 is less well known, and were struck after the Satin Finish proofs. Neither Breen, Miller, nor Bowers lists any diagnostics for matte proofs other than the extraordinary sharpness of strike and difference in finish. The surfaces on this piece are subdued and show a fine-grain texture when examined under a loupe. Breen (1977) lists five pieces on the roster of known specimens and Bowers (1993) speculates that as many as 10 may exist. The current NGC Census Report shows only three matte proofs certified for the 1921, one in PR62 and two PR65 (including this one). In addition to the finely detailed strike on each side, the coin is nearly brilliant with just the slightest accent of golden patina around the rims. Close examination with a loupe reveals a few tiny contact marks, but the only one that might show up in a photograph (and aid in tracing this coin's pedigree) is a small mark on the ray just below the M in UNUM.
From The Robert Moreno Registry Collection of Peace Dollars.
