1921<S$1> Chapman PR64 PCGS. Chapman proof Dollars are qualitatively different than their Zerbe counterparts, as the Chapman proofs have deeper reflectivity in the fields. They also more closely resemble proofs from 1902-04, but often show some contrast between the fields and devices (unlike proof Dollars from those earlier years).
It may be interesting and help to shed some light on this enigmatic issue by quoting at length from the Bowers-Borckardt 1993 Silver Dollar reference: "In 1921, Henry Chapman went to the Mint and had some mirror-surface Proofs struck to his order. This was done clandestinely by or for George T. Morgan, chief engraver, who had a little 'rare coin business' going on the side. Walter H. Breen reported that he has seen 'the bill of sale for 10 Proofs, Morgan to Chapman.' The original production of mirror-type Proofs must have been very small, perhaps just 15 in all (10 to Chapman, five to Ambrose Swasey). They were not officially sold by the mint, nor were any proof sets made that year."
The fields are deeply reflective, as one would expect on a Chapman proof, but there is very little contrast evident, the only noticeable trace being on the eagle on the reverse. Each side is covered with smoky-gray toning that effectively conceals the few surface blemishes that are present on the coin. Both of the major services combined have only certified 18 pieces in this grade (some, of course, being duplicates), with a mere six coins in higher grades (11/05). A rare opportunity to acquire this well produced proof from the final year of Morgan Dollar production.
From The JFS Collection, Part Three.
