1921$1> Chapman PR60 PCGS. On Chapman proofs the texture of the surfaces is noticeably different when compared to their more common Zerbe counterparts. They more closely resemble the no-contrast proofs of 1901-04, but sometimes the Chapmans do display some frost on the devices. Only twelve pieces were allegedly struck, but this may be inaccurate with some estimates ranging as high as 20 examples--either way, a very rare issue in the Morgan series.
The fields are deeply reflective, as one would expect on a Chapman proof, but there is very little contrast evident, the only noticeable trace being on the eagle on the reverse. Each side is bright and essentially untoned with a few slidemarks on the cheek, and hairlines in the fields serving to limit the grade. An exceedingly rare offering and an important opportunity for the advanced Morgan dollar collector. Housed in an early PCGS holder with a green insert. Population: 1 in 60, 33 finer (7/06).
