1921 Exceptional “Warren G Harding” Autograph Quote Signed as President Upon Viewing the Remains of 5,212 Dead American Soldiers Returned from France by Ship
WARREN G. HARDING (1865-1923). Twenty-Ninth President of the United States, serving from March 4, 1921 to August 2, 1923 until his death from a heart attack.
c. May 23, 1921 (no date or place) World War 1 Era, Rare Historical Autograph Quote Signed, “Warren G Harding” as President, measuring 2.5” x 5”, 1 page, (Hoboken, NJ.), Choice Crisp Extremely Fine. This vivid black ink quote is fully Written and Signed by Harding on the advent of the arrival of the freighter “Wheaton” returning the remains of 5,212 American Soldiers who had died during World War I. A newspaper report dated May 19, 1921 reported: “Bodies of 5,212 soldiers from every overseas division of the United States Army, every State in the Union and every American cemetery in France, except Komagne, were landed here today from the transport Wheaton, which arrived yesterday.” President Harding’s heartfelt Quote reads, in full:

“It must not be again - it must not be again! God grant that it shall not be."

While walking through the Hoboken dock shed that housed the soldier’s coffins, a weeping President Harding, accompanied by his wife, told the relatives of the dead, "I find a hundred thousand sorrows touching my heart, and there is a ringing in my ears”.
