1921-D<50C> MS65 PCGS. This issue has the distinction of the lowest mintage in the entire Walking Liberty Half Dollar series, according to normally accepted mintage figures. Just 208,000 were coined, and nearly all entered circulation. According to Walter Breen, writing in his Complete Encyclopedia, the original production was actually 257,672 coins, broken down to 165,000 coins from one die pair and 92,672 from a second die pair. It is believed that the odd amount of 49,672 half dollars were remelted, having never left the Denver Mint. Choice and Gem quality Mint State examples are truly rare. Indeed, PCGS has only certified three finer grade coins. This example is frosty and lustrous with brilliant silver luster and small specks or splashes of deep golden-brown toning. Population: 32 in 65, 3 finer (6/05).
From The Robert Moreno Collection.
