1921-D 50C MS65 PCGS. Despite the fact that we have offered several Gem quality '21-D Halves over the past several years, we have lost none of our respect for this date as both an absolute and a condition rarity. The present example is fully lustrous with a rich, frosty textured sheen. The surfaces glisten as the coin is rotated under the light. Strike is not usually a problem for high grade survivors of this issue, so if one is able to locate a Mint State example, it will invariably be boldly defined. True to form, this is just such a coin, and we note only inconsequential incompleteness of detail over a few of the obverse highpoints. Even though both sides present as such at most angles, the lightest overlay of golden iridescence prevents us from calling this coin untoned. There are, however, no bagmarks that are worthy of even the most casual mention. With just 208,000 pieces produced, the 1921-D boasts the lowest mintage in the Walking Liberty Half Dollar series. The vast majority of survivors grade below the VF level. Such is the rarity and desirability of this date in MS65 that our last offering of a similarly graded example resulted in a realized price of $19,550, or $8,250 more than the current (11/19/2002) CDN bid of $11,300. That coin was the example that sold as lot 5866 in our April 2002 Central States Signature Sale. From the Trane Collection.
