1921-D<50C> MS65 NGC. The 1921-D has the lowest mintage of the Walking Liberty half dollar series, and is scarce in all grades, especially in VF and higher. Bruce Fox, in his The Complete Guide to Walking Liberty Half Dollars, writes: "1921 was a recession year and there was a large reduction in business activity due to the end of the war. There was little need for small denomination coinage and the mints concentrated on silver dollars. Few halves were saved in mint state." In this regard, NGC and PCGS have certified fewer than 375 Uncirculated '21-D half dollars, most in the MS62 to MS64 range. Only about 50 Gems have been graded, with six pieces finer (3/06).
The lustrous surfaces of this Gem example are visited by occasional speckles of russet toning. The design elements are well impressed, including relatively sharp definition on Liberty's left thumb. A couple of minute marks on Liberty's midsection are mentioned for accuracy.
