1921-D 50C MS64 PCGS. The 208,000-piece mintage of the 1921-D was the lowest total among Walking Liberty halves. In an August 21, 2001 Numismatic News article entitled "Half Remains a Top Coin of the 20th Century," Paul Green writes: "In 1921 all denominations experienced lower-than-average mintages because the Mint was working day and night to create silver dollars." Green continues: "You could make a strong case that 1921 half-dollar production from all three facilities was really a token amount."
Highly lustrous surfaces on this near-Gem specimen display hints of light gray-tan color under magnification. A well directed strike leaves sharp definition on the design elements, including Liberty's hand and thumb and adjacent branches, the gown lines, and the eagle's plumage. A few minor marks concealed within Liberty's gown define the grade. Population: 84 in 64, 33 finer (8/07).

Coin Engraver: Adolph A.
