1921-D 50C MS64 PCGS. The 1921-D is one of the high visibility keys to the Walking Liberty series. One might suspect that from its mintage of 208,000 pieces, the lowest in the series. But additionally it is not an issue that was saved because of its low mintage, as the 1909-S VDB cent or 1916-D dime were, for instance. Part of the reason halves from this year are so scarce is because 1921 was a recession year. Even in good times, a half dollar represented a significant amount of money to set aside, but in a recession year it was just that much more improbable.
The 1921-D is a difficult issue to locate in high grades, and "high grades" is defined as coins in VF and better condition. This piece displays bright, shimmering, satin-like mint luster and there are no mentionable abrasions on either side. The striking details are only slightly soft in the centers, the most notable softness limited to the trailing leg of the eagle.

Coin Engraver: Adolph A.
