1921-D<50C> MS64 PCGS. One of the widely recognized keys to the Walking Liberty Half set, the 1921-D has the lowest mintage of the series with a mere 208,000 pieces struck. 1921 was a recession year, and there was a large reduction in business activity due to the end of WWI. There was little need for small denomination coinage, and the mints concentrated on silver dollars. The '21-D is very elusive above VF, and Mint State pieces are seldom seen as few were saved.
The coin offered in this lot displays soft luster with silver-gray and powder-blue patina, and a few speckles of gold-brown and charcoal-gray scattered about the obverse. The design elements are well struck, with most of the definition on Liberty's left thumb and head clear. Some of the gown lines are a tad soft. A few trivial marks occur on Liberty's left leg and the eagle's left wing. Population: 96 in 64, 35 finer (8/05).
