1921 50C Missouri MS67 NGC. While no name is ascribed to the frontiersman who appears on the Missouri statehood centennial halves, authoritative references such as Breen-Swiatek and Bowers consider him to be Daniel Boone, who died in 1820. The reverse also features Boone as part of the genre scene, one of the few cases in American numismatics where the same person appears on both sides of a coin. Oddly enough, this would happen to Boone again, as the 1934-1938 issues commemorating the bicentennial of his birth depict him on both sides, in portrait form on the obverse and with an Indian on the reverse.
This attractive "plain" Missouri half, a coin worthy of the finest collection, has frosty luster that is particularly noticeable on the devices. A hint of blue-gray patina is noted in the fields and two thin, dark diagonal lines appear near the frontiersman's feet, but the surfaces are silver-gray otherwise. Many Missouri "plain" halves were sold to non-collectors at the 1921 Missouri State Fair in Sedalia, and a survey of certified populations reveals just how few examples survive in this condition: NGC has certified just two Superb Gems, and PCGS has graded none (3/07).
From The Cary & Cheryl Porter Collection.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
