1921 50C Missouri 2x4 MS66 PCGS. Ex: JFS Collection. Among the interesting features of the Missouri halves is the use of incuse lettering for the name of the town that hosted the fair, Sedalia. Such incuse lettering is the first appearance on a commemorative, discounting designers' monograms and variety-creating punches. On the other hand, the second incuse feature of this coin, the eponymous 2x4 punch, commands more immediate attention.
Like its "plain" counterpart, the Missouri 2x4 is difficult to locate in Gem condition, and anything finer is a condition rarity. The example offered here has pale blue and lavender patina over satiny surfaces. The strike is above-average and displays most of the strap attached to the frontiersman's supply bag. Exceptionally appealing and vastly superior to the typical 2x4 half. Neither NGC nor PCGS has certified any numerically finer examples (3/07).
From The Cary & Cheryl Porter Collection.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
