1921 50C Missouri 2x4 MS66 NGC. Although Alabama was admitted 22nd into the Union (hence the 22 on some examples) and Missouri was admitted 24th (hence the 24 on some specimens), the intervening state, Maine, bears no parallel 23. Furthermore, the Maine was produced and dated 1920, while the Alabama and Missouri were produced and dated 1921--at odds with the order of the states' actual centennials, 1919, 1920, and 1921 for Alabama, Maine, and Missouri in that order.
Both the Alabama 22 and Missouri 24 issues were blatant marketing ploys designed to sell an additional SKU or stockkeeping unit--a term that today's Mint is also quite familiar with. The Missouri with 24 incused on the coin is a popular and in-demand key to the "classic" commemorative silver series, ranging from 1892 to 1954. This stunning example shows none of the usual small contact marks or slide marks frequently seen on lower-Mint State pieces, with a touch of gold throughout and deep almond toning near the obverse rim. In MS66, this piece is one of 18 so certified at NGC, with 25 at PCGS. There are none finer at either service (1/08).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
